A Parent is extremely permissive when he or she...

  • Has few rules.
  • Allows the child to do as the child pleases.

When parents are extremely permissive...

  • Children are cranky, whiney. They are very aggressive and want their way all the time.

A parent is extremely strict when he or she...

  • Expects immediate obedience.
  • Gives no explanation for demands.
  • Uses physical punishment.

A parent is moderate when he or she...

  • Has rules and enforces them consistently.
  • Is firm, with kindness, warmth and love.
  • Takes the child's age and uniqueness into account.
  • Tries to understand why the child acts the way he or she does.

When parents are moderate...

  • Children are responsible and cooperative. They have good self­-concepts and are considerate of others. Moderation works well when disciplining school-age children.
