Many agencies require a certain amount of training before approving your homestudy or sending your dossier. If your agency is one of them, most (if not all) of the below may count towards your required time. Check with your agency. If your agency does not require the training, these are all very information and useful training programs to go through anyway!

Foster Care & Adoptive Community Distance Learning

Inexpensive (Most course under $4) for foster and/or adoptive parents on 66 topics including: childhood physical and emotional development birth through teen years, hyperactivity, post traumatic stress disorder, behavioral issues such as lying, cheating, learning disorders, how to advocate for your child in school, fetal alcohol syndrome, etc. They are approved for social workers to use for continuing ed in some states, so they should be good if your social worker suggests training, or just for general learning.

 

Adoption Preparation: Adopting the Older Child

An online course in adopting an older child with lessons such as joys and challenges of adopting the older child, day to day living with the older child, evaluating yourself, where do I start, support and resources. Fee is $39 – basic, $57 to get the certificate.

 

Training Courses for Adopting the International Child

Several training course specifically geared to adopting a child internationally and the issues you will face after placement such as: School issues- behavioral and language, hosting children abroad, helping your child develop a foundation of learning, psycho-educational screening, etc. Course are around $29 each.
